“Expedition set for ‘Ghost Peaks’”
Mountains beneath the ice sheet? Unaccountably so. Says Dr. Robin Bell, “They shouldn’t be there.” Continental collision could have created the Gamburtsevs 500 million years ago, but they would have eroded in the intervening eras. No evidence of a hot spot in the area has been found. Then how are there mountains?
The answer should be obvious. Has no one ever seen “Aliens versus Predator”? Ever read “At the Mountains of Madness”? Antarctica is the favored retreat of misanthropic alien civilizations. Whether it’s arena-building for a bloodsport of passage, or hewing cities out of asteroids to preserve the memory of a nation’s eons-long ascendency, aliens don’t think twice about construction on a scale reserved for earth processes. You know the moon? Aliens built that in about a year.
The implications of discovering such megalithic monuments are dire. Not only do aliens hate being “discovered”, they loathe the justifications for discovery oft used by inferior species (for instance, increasing what we foolishly call “knowledge”. True knowledge would drive the populace to riot against all forms of life, even its own). It wouldn’t even cross the aliens’ collective mind to let a few of us live after they overran our world in the name of their great and terrible gods.
Utter annihilation awaits humanity—and for what? A few scientists’ bragging rights for scraping up some snow? I say No! Merciful heavens, let us concern ourselves with trivialities like food supply, disease and our continued existence. We must never disinter what cannot be returned to the grave.
